5 proposals for The Absolut Open, Inverleith House, Edinburgh 1999.
The
proposed temporary structure rests on top of the toilet extension
at the front of Inverleith House, Edinburgh. Constructed from timber
and corrugated roofing it will contain the illusion of a domestic
living space viewable from both the inside and outside of the gallery.
Due to the temporary nature of the work the piece will not interfere
with the fabric of the building, and can be easily dismantled after
the close of the show. The external appearance of the structure
will contrast with the neo-classical architecture of the site, and
the seedy visuals of the internal artwork will provide a visual
foil to the pristine interior of the house. As part of the work
is that it can be experienced from inside the gallery the window
of gallery seven would need to be about six inches open. The width
of the opening would be small enough that no viewer would be able
to climb through and the window could be fixed in that position.
If necessary a means could be devised whereby the window was fixed
at the appropriate height during the day and then locked shut at
night. The roof of the temporary structure would be higher than
the open window, so that no rain or weather could enter the gallery.
